SYNOPSIS
Remy Washington, a Black man and widower, has inherited both a drive-in movie theater and the responsibility of raising Pup, his late husband’s straight, white teenage son. The two forge a strong bond around a shared love of classic American monster movies, but when Remy discovers that Pup has been tormenting a gay classmate, their relationship begins to fracture, and the real horrors surface.
Beneath the flickering glow of the drive-in screen, MONSTERS OF THE AMERICAN CINEMA becomes a haunting, funny, and unexpectedly tender tale of fatherhood and loss that the Los Angeles Times hails as “exhilarating.”

Playwright
Christian St. Croix
he/him - Christian St. Croix, a queer, Black playwright with working class roots, has been gaining recognition with his breakout, award-winning play Monsters of the American Cinema. As Los Angeles Times critic Charles McNulty noted, St. Croix brings "grit" and "capacious empathy" to the stage, with a dash of surrealism. His O'Neill Finalist, WE ARE THE FORGOTTEN BEASTS, and the ’90s-inspired ZACH have drawn critical attention, the latter praised by the Seattle Times as a "nostalgic yet probing exploration of belonging." His work has appeared at Rogue Machine Theatre, Diversionary Theatre, and ArtsWest Playhouse, and St. Croix has received honors including the Carlo Annoni International and Dominic Orlando Playwriting Awards. A Craig Noel Awards nominee, his latest project, WE LOVERS, continues his exploration of slice-of-life stories salted with the fantastical.
Playing Remy
Jon Joseph Gentry
he/they - Gentry is a multifaceted artist whose credits span theater, film, television, and gaming. Born and raised in Houston, Texas, Jon infuses his art with a unique perspective on Black queerness in America. His award-winning solo show BLACK BASTARD has been presented at the Santa Monica Playhouse, PlayGround Solofest, Whitefire Solofest, Lavender Fest, and the LA LGBT Center. Regional theater credits include Shakespeare Santa Cruz, Mark Taper Forum, Boston Court Pasadena, International City Theatre, and Casa 0101. Screen credits include SOMANG, BEHOLD A LADY, TEN, and OUTLAW EMPIRES. He gained viral recognition as the voice of Preston Garvey in FALLOUT 4, with his memorable (and meme-able) performance. As a teaching artist, Gentry has collaborated with The Moth, Young Storytellers, Get Lit, and the Los Angeles Performing Arts Conservatory. MFA: American Conservatory Theater BA: Harvard University. Tyler Gevas
he/him - is excited to be making his Urbanite debut as Pup in MONSTERS OF THE AMERICAN CINEMA. Tyler is a Sarasota native who previously performed at The Asolo Rep as Kurt von Trapp in THE SOUND OF MUSIC and Young John Webster in SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE.
